Cameron Woodrow, of West Country Website Company, is one of the co-founders of the new Stannary Brewing Company. It’s an independent craft beer brewery in the middle of Tavistock.
Where did it come from?
We’ve been talking for a few years, between friends who home brew. I’ve been home brewing with my father in law for five years, and we knew we were brewing good beer. The step change to commercial brewing was huge though, it meant a lot of investment in kit among other things.
Then in April 2015, we saw an eBay listing for second hand brewing kit in Looe and we put in a cheeky bid, never expecting to win it. Then we won the auction, so we decided we’d better get on with it!
Over the past five years, there’s been a renaissance in craft beer, and it has broadened the landscape for beer with brewing techniques and ingredients like malts and hops. It’s given real scope for new beers, not just faddy ones, but beers with unbelievable flavour instead of a soggy pint. That’s what we’re about.
So when and where can people try it?
We’ve got a soft launch of our tap room this weekend, then we’re hoping to be able to open the brewery shop during the week and hold regular events at the brewery to showcase our beers, and others from around the UK and hopefully some international ones too, to spark an interest in different beers. All four of us are doing this around full time jobs, so we are going gently to see what the demand is.
We’ve also got some great ideas around matching food and beers. Some of the guys are very handy in the kitchen, so watch this space!
